Miss Vernita Dene Griffin died suddenly September 14, 1987 in San Antonio, Texas. She was the daughter of Mrs. Lucinda Cosby Griffin and Earle Lee Griffin and was born in Madison on September 8, 1967. She attended Lackland Elementary School, Pease Middle School and John Jay High School. At Jay she was a superb athlete, lettering in volleyball, track and basketball. She earned a basketball scholarship to the University of Texas at San Antonio. 

Funeral services were conducted from Chapel No. 3 at Lackland Air Force Base with final rites at Fairview Cemetery on Monday September 21 with Reverend W. J. Reid officiating. In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, two brothers, maternal grandmother Mrs. Nonie Bell Cosby of Madison, numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Jones and Turner Home was in charge of arrangements.
