James Percy Adams Sr., 93, died February 12, 2016. He was born July 10, 1922. He was a big man with a big heart who was bigger than life. He was one of four children born to Ross Copeland Adams and Percy Adams in the Apalachee Community. He was affectionately known as JP. He was preceded in death by all of his siblings J.W., Annie Bell and Dorsey Adams.
In 1939 he was drafted into the United States Army, where he earned the rank of Corporal and serviced as a Military Police Officer. When he returned home from the Army he and Mary Ellen Lawrence were married on October 18, 1944. On January 2, 1946 James and Mary were blessed with a beautiful bright-eyed baby boy, James Percy Adams Jr. They were also blessed to raise Barbara Jean Lawrence Pennington, since the age of 3, as their own daughter after the passing of her mother.
JP and his brother Dorsey Adams were the kings of BBQ. They spent countless days preparing their famous BBQ and Brunswick stew for people near and far.
On Friday, February 12, 2016 he went home to be with his Heavenly Father.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 72 years, Mary Ellen Lawrence Adams; daughter Barbara Jean Lawrence Pennington and Prince, Jr., Laurelton, New York; grandson James Percy Adams III and Jacquelyn, Covington; granddaughter Toryi Felicia Adams, Madison; Prince Pennington III, Laurelton, New York and Philip Pennington, Waldorf, Maryland; great grandchildren Chonta, Lynn, Jasmine, Monay, Chyna, Jaccelyn, Nilah, Daniella, Anaiah, Somalia, Dematria, Damian, James IV, Charles Jr., Philip Jr., Prince IV and Christian; great-great grandchildren Derrick Jr., Desiree, KJaleb, Sean, Brionna, Andre and Cyril; special nieces Emma Lawrence and daughters, Vanessa, Juanita, Janice and Velma, Martha Ward, Pearl McClelland and Delinda Ross; and sister-in-law Odessa Lawrence, New Jersey.
Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Madison with Rev. W. J. Reid Eulogist and Rev. Ken Reid officiating. Interment was in Madison Memorial Gardens. Casket attendants were James A. Allen II, James Wilson, Leroy Elder Jr., Danny Banks, Clement Adams, Michael A. Hope, Franklin L. Johnson, Thomas L. Davis, Ken Williams and Reggie Banks Sr. Honorary Pall Bearers were Carlton Adams, Pete Adams, Bishop Lawrence, Harrison Grier, Darrell J. Hope, Percy Adams, James A. Allen I, Johnny Thompson, Donald Winder and Bryan C. Hope. Flower Attendants were Martha H. Adams, Leslie A. Vestal, LaWanda Wynn, Belinda Morris, Felicia Butler, Terri Banks, Damita F. Hope, Shamakka Banks, Malinka Kelly and Artelia Butler. Watts Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
