Doug Barrett, 72 of Hiawassee, passed away Monday, April 10, 2017 at his home.

Mr. Barrett was born December 10, 1944 in Hiawassee, to Jay and Ethel Lee Melton Barrett. Doug was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during the mid 60’s in Korea as a medical specialist.

He was a person who loved to work with his hands and could do almost anything. Woodworking was one of his passions and he produced beautiful works of art including bowls and other objects.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Gilbert Barrett; his parents and a brother, Donald L. Barrett.

Survivors include: sister, Virginia (Arthur) Spiva, of Atlanta; brothers, Ronnie L. Barrett, Danny L. (Roxanne) Barrett, and Larry D. (Cheryl) Barrett, all of Hiawassee; sister-in-law, Jimmie Barrett of Decatur; nephews, Brad Barrett, Britt Barrett, and Brian Barrett, and nieces, India Barrett London, Blythe Barrett Nicholson, Blair Barrett Burch, Brandi Barrett, and Bethany Barrett.​

Funeral services were held Friday, April 14, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee with Rev. Glen Eller officiating. Interment followed in the Morgan Memorial Park Cemetery in Madison at 3 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Dr. Jim Ross officiating.

The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jacky Jones, Bernard Moody, Dale Penland, L. G. Hamilton, James Melton, Jesse Melton, Bobby Patel, and Ike Waldroup. Honorary pallbearers: Gary Johnston, Ed Gilliland, and Wallace Allen.​

The family received friends at the Cochran Funeral Home of Hiawassee, Thursday, April 13, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
