Pierre Walker Dies Here Sunday
Pierre Gautier Walker died suddenly early Sunday morning at Morgan Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Walker, 79, was a native of Morgan County, a member of a family whose history has been synonymous with that of the county. He was born July 13, 1895 at Walkerest, the family’s plantation nine miles out of Madison, now owned by Thomas Cousins of Atlanta. He was the son of Peter G. and Bessie Robertson Walker. The Walkers were prominent land owners and their forefathers built some of Madison and Morgan County’s finest houses, most of them still standing today.
Through his father, Peter Walker became interested in agriculture at an early age and actually became involved in the operation of the Walker plantation at the age of twelve. He completed school at Madison High School then went on to the University of Georgia where he studied agriculture. He was a member of Phi Delta Fraternity there and was active in an advisory capacity to the chapter for many years.
Following the completion of his studies at the University, he returned to Walkerest where he took over management of the plantation. Later in his life he and his family moved to Hamilton where he worked with the late Cason Callaway in the operation of Blue Springs Farms.
He was one of four children of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Walker. Two sisters, Mrs. Ely Callaway of LaGrange and Miss Mineola Walker and a brother Mr. Edmund Walker died a number of years ago. He was married to the former Anne Barrett of Walton County on June 15, 1920. The Walker had three sons, Peter G. Walker, Barrett L. Walker and Marshall Peteet Walker. Peter G. Walker died several years ago following a heart attack.
Mr. Walker was a member and former deacon of the First Baptist Church and a past member of Madison Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his wife, his sons Barrett Walker of Wheaton, Illinois and Marshall Walker of Gastonia, North Carolina, nine grandchildren, Peter J. Walker, III, Lona and Lauren Walker of Atlanta. Ann Walker of Raleigh, North Carolina, Barrett L. Walker Jr., a student at Georgia Tech, Marshall Walker Jr., Garth Pierre and Caroline Walker of Gastonia.
Funeral services were held at ten a.m. Tuesday morning May 7 at the Madison Presbyterian Church The Reverend David Bookout officiated. Pall bearers were Cornelius Vason, Graham Ponder, Bob Walker, Bryan Walker, Artis Peppers and Brooks Pennington Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Paul W. Reid, C.W. Richter, Jr., Nathan Hunter and Seaborn Walker. Interment was at the Madison Cemetery. Simmons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pierre Gautier Walker, Madison social leader, died Saturday, February 23, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Walker was the former Anne Barrett of Walton County. She was born in Jersey, the daughter of the late Charles Lamar Barrett and Ella Allen Barrett. She was married to the late Pierre Walker, member of a prominent Morgan County family, in 1920, and moved with him to Walkerest, the family estate nine miles out of Madison.
She delighted in social events and her country home and later her house in town were the scene of some of Madison's grandest events. The Walkers later sold Walkerest and moved to Hamilton where he managed Blue Springs Farm for his cousin the late Cason Callaway. They returned to Madison after World War II. Mrs. Walker was active in Madison Baptist Church, Henry Walton Chapter Daughters of American Revolution, Magnolia Garden Club and Morgan County Historical Society.
She is survived by two sons, Mr. Barrett L. Walker, Madison, and Mr. Marshall Peteet Walker, Lafayette, Louisiana. Her eldest son, Mr. Peter Walker III died as a young man. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Peter G. Walker IV, Atlanta, Mrs. Tom Fleming, Jacksonville, Florida, Mrs. Richard Dutro, Atlanta, Mrs. Steve Sessions, Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Mr. Barrett L. Walker, Jr., Raleigh, North Carolina, Mr. Marshall Peteet Walker, Jr., St. Croix Island, Mr. Garth Walker, St. John's Island, and Mr. Pierre Walker II, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Miss Caroline Walker, Lafayette, Louisiana and 10 great grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Monday morning, February 25 at 11 a.m. at Madison Cemetery. The Reverend Jim Ross, pastor of Madison Baptist Church, officiated. Pritchett Chapel was in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that those who wish make contributions to the Madison Baptist Church building fund.
